After reporting aboard the Oklahoma City in ‘78, my first port visit was Keelung ROC. We were there for five days and I was able enjoy some wonderful liberty both in Keelung and Taipei. We were scheduled to visit Kaoshung a couple of months later but it got cancelled because POTUS Carter decided to recognize the PRC so we couldn’t visit Taiwan anymore. Big disappointment 🤬

After reporting to my first ship the USS BLUE RIDGE in Okinawa, my first port visit was Keelung in 1977. We hit Keeling twice and I'm pretty sure the BLUE RIDGE was the last US ship to visit Taiwan. Great place, great food, great women.

Great place, great food, great women. The second time that I hit Keelung while on the BR, had to have been in 1978. Captain McIntyre (Sp) had half the pier full of his furniture to take back CONUS. A fast approaching Typhoon made us leave early. I'm pretty sure that he did not get all of his furniture on board. What a loss. I always wanted to get back to Keelung and Taipei.

USS Fresno was steaming/dieseling from Yokosuka to Kaishung when the treaty with the ROC was abrogated and we literally went in large circles until the State Department approved our visit. I took a couple days leave to fly to Taipei to see my friends that I had just left at US Taiwan Defense Command (USTDC). Shore duty in Taiwan was most pleasant though I had turned in my resignation when I got verbal orders there. I wanted to go to another sea tour. (I was young and confused back then.) 😎😎😎

Actually I think I was a year off on both posts. The first time I hit Keelung on the BLUE RIDGE was December, 1976 and the second time time was a year later or so. I may be wrong about the BLUE RIDGE being the last US ship to visit Taiwan. Would still love to go back there.
